[texts]Thermal Consideration of SWIFT XRT Radiator At-35C or Colder in Low Earth Orbit - Choi, Michael K
The X-Ray Telescope (XRT) is an instrument on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) SWIFT spacecraft. The thermoelectric cooler (TEC) for the charge coupled device (CCD) of the XRT requires a radiator temperature of -35 C or colder, and a goal of -55 C to minimize the damage by radiation. The waste heat rejected from the TEC to the radiator is in the 8 W to 20 W range. In the Phase A baseline design, the XRT radiator is mounted to the rear end of the XRT telescope tube and is ...

[texts]A Numerical Method for Calculating Stellar Occultation Light Curves from an Arbitrary Atmospheric Model - Chamberlain, D. M.
We present a method for speeding up numerical calculations of a light curve for a stellar occultation by a planetary atmosphere with an arbitrary atmospheric model that has spherical symmetry. This improved speed makes least-squares fitting for model parameters practical. Our method takes as input several sets of values for the first two radial derivatives of the refractivity at different values of model parameters, and interpolates to obtain the light curve at intermediate values of one or more...

[texts]The Effects of Ultra-Long-Range Flights on the Alertness and Performance of Aviators - Caldwell, John A.
This investigation assessed the impact of ultra-long-range (ULR) simulator flights, departing either in the morning or late evening, on the alertness and performance of 17 commercial aviators. Immediately prior to and throughout each flight, alertness and performance were assessed via a computerized test of sustained attention, subjective questionnaires, and ''hand-flying'' tasks. There were fatigue-related effects on the majority of assessments, and the nature of these effects was consistent ac...

[texts]The Role of Instability Waves in Predicting Jet Noise - Goldstein, M. E.
There has been an ongoing debate about the role of linear instability waves in the prediction of jet noise. Parallel mean flow models, such as the one proposed by Lilley, usually neglect these waves because they cause the solution to become infinite. The resulting solution is then non-causal and can, therefore, be quite different from the true causal solution for the chaotic flows being considered here...

[texts]Time-Domain Impedance Boundary Conditions for Computational Aeroacoustics - Tam, Christopher K. W.
It is an accepted practice in aeroacoustics to characterize the properties of an acoustically treated surface by a quantity known as impedance. Impedance is a complex quantity. As such, it is designed primarily for frequency-domain analysis. Time-domain boundary conditions that are the equivalent of the frequency-domain impedance boundary condition are proposed. Both single frequency and model broadband time-domain impedance boundary conditions are provided...

The two-flux method was used to obtain transient solutions for a plane layer including internal reflections and scattering. The layer was initially at uniform temperature, and was heated or cooled by external radiation and convection. The two-flux equations were examined as a means for evaluating the radiative flux gradient in the transient energy equation. Comparisons of transient temperature distributions using the two-flux method were made with results where the radiative flux gradient was ev...

Previous investigations have demonstrated the importance of the effect of linearly varying axial or in-plane loading on the vibration characteristics of beams and flat plates. Beginning with a variational representation of the eigenvalue problem, methods are discussed by which both upper and lower bounds for t...
